FMSAC Receive Grant, Install New Weather Station
PRESS RELEASE
Updated: Sept. 13, 2005
The Friends of the Mt Shasta Avalanche Center (FMSAC) has been awarded a grant from REI, Inc. in support of the Forest Service Avalanche Center’s rescue equipment project. FMSAC received $4699 in cash and gear, which will aid in the Center’s goal of purchasing and placing rescue equipment cashes at several well-used backcountry locations throughout the Mt Shasta area.
The number of backcountry users continues to grow every year, and it is the Avalanche Center’s priority not only to educate the public about avalanche dangers, but also to be prepared for rescues should the need arise. The equipment cashed in backcountry locations reduces response time to aid those in need, potentially saving lives. In avalanche burial scenarios, time is of the essence.
FMSAC has also purchased a new weather station for the Avalanche Center which was installed September 6th at a site on the east side of Mt Eddy increasingly popular with backcountry users. The new station will provide additional snow accumulation, wind and temperature data for the area which will them be used to forecast avalanche potential specifically for the region.
The remote station was constructed by Scott Schmidt of Snowdog Engineering and installed by Schmidt and Avalanche Forecaster and Wilderness Ranger Matt Hill. The public will have access to the new station data and the Daily Avalanche Hazard Forecast on the web at www.shastaavalanche.org, www.fmsac.org or by telephone at 530-926-9613. It is then up to individuals to use the advisories to make safe decisions about where and when to enjoy the backcountry.
The Friends’ 4th Annual Snow Ball, their primary benefit for the Avalanche Center, will by held Saturday, January 21st 2006 at the Mt Shasta City Park and include dinner by Keith Cool of the Mt Shasta Supermarket, dancing with a live band, raffle prizes and a silent auction. For more information or to help support FMSAC, visit them on the web at www.fmsac.org.
