2007 Whitaker-Keane Memorial Scholarship to Robin Kohn

The Friends of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center (FMSAC) awarded their 2007 Whitaker-Keane Memorial Scholarship to Robin Kohn of Mount Shasta on September 10th. The scholarship will cover tuition expenses for the National Avalanche School, October 21-26 in Snowbird, Utah.

Community Rallies Around Avalanche Center

FMSAC Receive Grant, Install New Weather Station

The Friends of the Mt Shasta Avalanche Center (FMSAC) has been awarded a grant from REI, Inc. in support of the Forest Service Avalanche Center’s rescue equipment project. FMSAC received $4699 in cash and gear, which will aid in the Center’s goal of purchasing and placing rescue equipment cashes at several well-used backcountry locations throughout the Mt Shasta area.

Moms dedicate bench to lost sons

There is a new stone bench facing Mount Shasta at Bunny Flat just above the parking lot. When you sit in it, think of Kevin Keane and Travis Whitaker, killed in an automobile crash on their way home  to the Sacramento area after climbing the mountain on August 31st 2003. Both boys were born in 1985.

"Who fulfilled their dream of reaching the summit of Mount Shasta August 31st, 2003", the plaque on the bench reads.

Avalanche Center 'Friends' raise $6,000

The Friends of the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center raised over $6,000 during their 3rd Annual Snowball fund-raiser January 22nd.

Climbing ranger Keith Potts said the funds will be used "to continue to upgrade and install weather station equipment, purchase rescue equipment to be positioned in popular backcountry locations and increase public accessibility to avalanche awareness education."
